Private Fredrick Pott, Ohio 9th Infantry, All-German Civil War Unit, Group Incl. CDV, Pipe, Badge, and More
Lot of 5, including a post-war CDV of Fredrick Pott in civilian dress, credited on verso to P. Zutterling, Cincinnati, OH. Also with a clay pipe with basket-weave bowl, raised text reading, "Germany," and inked inscription reading, "Fred. Pott / 9th OVI Co H / 1861 / Der Neuner [The 9th] / Immer Treu [Always faithful] / 1864." Lot completed by three badges, including a partial acorn-shaped 14th Corps badge, a GAR ribbon for Post 47, Cincinnati, and a Masonic badge of Maltese cross form, bearing an armorial shield adorned with a sword and plow, wreathed in olive, with text reading, "Cincinnati Commandery No. 3 / K.T. / En Avant."
The 9th Ohio Infantry regiment was led by the renowned Colonel Robert L. McCook. All of the members were Cincinnati or Cincinnati-area Germans, and most were members of the Cincinnati Central Turners. The Turners or Turnvereine were a paramilitary German-American athletic society. Frederick Pott (1840-1913) enlisted in the Union Army on April 22, 1861 and mustered into Company H of the 9th Ohio Infantry that May. This regiment participated in the Siege of Chattanooga, the Battles of Chickamauga and Brown's Ferry, and the Atalanta Campaign, among other engagements. Pott was mustered out after three years of service on June 7, 1864. After the war, he worked as a safe maker in Cincinnati, where he remained active in the GAR for several years.

CDV with surface soil and toning. Obverse of 14th Corps badge absent.
