Portrait of Alfred, Andrew Jackson's Slave, Oil on Canvas

19th century, unframed and by unidentified artist, with inscription from owner on verso listing the work as having been painted 1886; 24 x 36 in. A seated portrait of Alfred, who was Jackson's horse groom and lived at the Hermitage longer than anyone and is buried near Jackson's tomb. Though seated photographs were taken of Alfred, a comparable image is not known. It is possible that the portrait was executed from life.
