[POLITICS - 1892 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION]. A pair of manuscript code books related to elections in Alabama, ca 1892.

18mo (104 x 168 mm) leatherette booklets. Each gilt-stamped "Department of the Interior 1-944."

Each book, duplicates of one another to be used in tandem, contains a code in manuscript. Each booklet begins with alphabetized pages, much like an address book. On these pages, in alphabetical order, are codewords with corresponding page numbers. The second half of each booklet's pages are numbered where the codewords are written with corresponding words or phrases. The content appears to relate to the 1892 election in Alabama with names, phrases, and statements that relate to political parties ("Prominent Republican leaders in Ala."; "Colored Republicans";), newspapers ("Alliance or Peoples newspapers"), President [Benjamin] Harrison, and caucusing ("Can't do anything with because he is wooden headed but honest"; "Think they are trying to cover something up"; "Think they want money for themselves"). Harrison lost reelection to Grover Cleveland winning his second, non-consecutive term.
