Photographic Archive of Lt. G.P. Legard, 2nd Northumberland Fusiliers

Lot of 43 photographs. One group of 24 images, 3 x 4 in. appear to be from a "civilian" camera. They do not all have identification on them, but there are a few. These were most likely taken when Legard was north of the Punjab in India. There are many images of Sikhs, cooks transporting supplies, the men wear pith helmets. Some images of the men with their hunting trophies, wild boar and blackbuck. A couple of the views seem to be a polo game. There are 3 slightly larger images (3.25 x 5.25 to 3.75 x 6 in.), two of which seem to be a soccer or rugby game. Six with professional lettering in the negative, "St. George's Day 1913, Furniss Sheffield," views of parades and formations on the parade ground. One 9.25 x 11.25 in. enlargement of formation on parade ground.

The last six are varying sizes, most larger with multiple people in them. One semi-panoramic view, 4.75 x 11.5 in., seems to be the same parade ground as the group of six. One 8 x 11 shows 30+ people, including a minister/priest, a few women, men in all kinds of dress. A 5.75 x 9.5 in. image shows a dozen gentlemen, 10 of whom are in riding clothes.

Geoffrey Philip Legard (1893-1915). Seems to have enlisted before the war, serving in India. One of the smaller photographs is of the Viceregal Lodge, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India. He later took part in the Battle of Frezenberg Ridge with the 2nd Battalion Northumberland fusiliers, with the 84th Brigade, 28th Division. He was Killed in action on 8 May 1915. His body was never recovered, so the family put a memorial at St. John the Evangelist Church, Washingborough, North Kesteven, Lincolnshire. The inscription reads: "To the memory of / Geoffrey Philip / Legard / Lieutenant 2nd Battn / Northunberland Fusiliers / Killed in Action Near Ypres / In Defence of his King and Country / On May 8th 1915 / Aged 22 Years. / "Eternal God is Thy Refuge / and Underneath are the  / Everlasting Arms."
