Photograph of General Sherman and His Staff

An 8.5 x 6.5 copy albumen after Brady, ca 1865. Verso impressed with "Historical Collection of H.W. Fay, DeKalb, Ill." in purple ink. This published view shows Sherman seated among nineteen of his staff officers, mostly colonels and few brigadiers. At the end of the war Brady photographed a well known and widely distributed view of Sherman and his corps/division commanders on occasion of the momentous Grand Review held at Washington D.C. in May 1865. This is the less frequently encountered view of Sherman's staff officers from the same sitting. On 24, 1865 Sherman paraded 65,000 of his veteran bummers past President Johnson and assembled dignitaries in what he recalled as "the happiest and most satisfying moment of my life." The photograph mirrors the collective face of victory.
