Philadelphia Derringer Attributed to Private J.H. Huddle, 9th Texas Infantry

Approx. .48 caliber, 3.5" barrel, no S/N. German silver mounts with typical broad scroll engraving throughout. Barrel marked on top flat with "J.H. Huddle", breech marked "PARIS" and "TEXAS.

A search of the United States National Park Service Soldier and Sailor's database returns a result of a James Huddle who served in Company A of the 9th Texas Infantry Regiment, enlisting September 1, 1861.  Hard fortune followed the regiment from the very beginning, with disease sweeping through the ranks shortly after its organization. After organization and several weeks of drilling, the regiment traveled to Memphis, and thence to Little Rock, Arkansas, where they weathered a winter rife with illness.

By the time the Spring of 1862 arrived, the regiment had been freshly outfitted with much-needed supplies and had been transferred to Corinth, Mississippi. Huddle would see his first and last action with the 9th at the Battle of Shiloh on April 6th, 1862. Assigned to Bragg's Corps, the 9th Texas. Like many of the Confederate regiments at the battle, the Texans were ill-equipped, using outdated muskets, shotguns, and civilian arms such as this derringer. The regiment suffered heavy casualties at Shiloh, losing 56 killed and wounded in the two days of fighting, including two company officers. Private Huddle was among those wounded, and died of his wounds July 10, 1862.

Includes small folder of photocopied regimental returns detailing Huddle's service and subsequent death by wounds.

Condition:

Good to very good. Barrel has a mixed brown, pewter, and dark coloration with German silver fittings taking on a pleasing luster. Minimal handling wear to wood. Bore is good; slightly brown with visible edges to rifling.
