Percussion Target Rifle

.32 caliber, 24" octagonal barrel, NSN.  Blade front sight with aperture rear sight and semi buckhorn elevator rear sight.  Brass trigger guard, buttplate, toe plate, and patch box.  Unmarked back-action lock with double set-trigger and threaded barrel.  Replacement ramrod.

Barrel inscription "E. Phillips" reveals the origin to be from the shop of prominent New York gunsmith, Edwin Phillips, who created some of the most elegant heavy percussion target rifles of the Civil War period. Examples are pictured in Swinney and Rowe, "The New York State Firearms Trade," Vol. 5, pp. 383-389. Believed to have been designed as a "buggy rifle," as its barrel easily unscrews from breech/buttstock.

Condition:

Good condition.  Barrel has a dark plumb patination with some thinning on sharp edges.  Some age darkening to other parts, stock shows minor handling imperfections with no serious cracks or splits.  Action functions normally; bore is fair to good with some old fouling.
