John Reynolds (1788-1865) was a certainly career politician. By the time he was elected governor in Illinois in 1830, Reynolds had already proven himself to be a successful and well-liked politician.
Prior to the to his victory to claim the governorship of Illinois in 1830, he had been appointed a justice on the Illinois Supreme court in 1818. He held that appointment until 1825, but swiftly joined the Illinois House of Representatives in 1826. He resigned from his governorship in 1834 to take a seat in the US House of Representatives for the state of Illinois. He would continue in politics by rejoining the Illinois house of Representatives for two more terms and one more with the US House of Representatives.
