Pair of 18th Century Silver Mounted English Flintlock Pistols by Smith

.58 caliber, 9.125" octagonal-to-round barrels, no S/N. Bright finish, walnut stock, silver mounts. 4.625" long flat locks engraved SMITH with sliding cock safeties, fenced, waterproof pans, roller frizzes and flat faceted swan neck cocks. Silver triggerguards with Birmingham assay marks, including the Birmingham anchor, the lion passant, the date letter "I" in shield and an illegible maker's mark. The "I" letter indicates 1781 production for the silver mounts. The maker's mark on the deeply chiseled classical butt caps are illegible as well, but the same assay marks and date codes are present. Barrels with Tower private proofs, sterling openwork side plate, thumb plate and with silver wire forming an apron around the tangs. Include bone tipped wood ramrods that appear to be original to the pistols. Likely the work of William Smith, who apprenticed to the famous maker John Joyner in 1766 and worked in London during the latter part of the 18th century and early 19th century.

Condition:

Very good. Metal cleaned to bright with some light pitting on the locks and cocks. Barrel with scattered surface oxidation and discoloration. Mechanically functional, heavily oxidized bores are very dirty. Silver mounts dull and lightly tarnished. Both stocks with scattered bumps, dings, scuffs and light scratches. One with some repaired cracks and replaced wood in the forend near the tip, the other with a crack running about 2" from the front of the lock to the forend and a 3.5" spliced replaced piece of wood at the forend, essentially from the pipe forward.
