Newark, New Jersey in the Civil War, Manuscript Archive

Cabinet card of unidentified soldier or military school cadet. With backmark of a Newark, NJ photographer. Faded with serious water damage.

ADS, Annapolis, Jan. 6th, 1862. Capt. Charles H. Erb, Capt. Co. L, 9th NJ Vols. to Mayor of City of Newark. With list of families and their allotments that accompanied $816. These were payments withheld from soldiers' pay to send home to their families. Capt. Erb does apologize: "Hoping that you excuse the trouble you have to undergo on my account."

There are three receipts for City of Newark Scrip (for bond of Feb. 1865). This may be the bond noted in one of the papers in this lot "Resolution Authorizing the Volunteer Aid Committee to Borrow Money to Pay Soldiers' Bounty" which was passed in late 1864.

Most of the lot consists of 39 receipts or other documents, most pertaining to the Committee on Reception of Soldiers and dated July - Sept. 1865. A few are specific, such as reception for the 13th regiment, another for the 33rd regiment. Most are general supplies, including bands, food, pots & pans, etc. There are a few that address the center S. Hospital, apparently for parties for the returning wounded. For example, one is labeled "Carting lager beer for reception of the soldiers to Hospital" ($12).

Estimate: $200 - $400
