New Hampshire Militia Records, 1828-1837

Ledger, half-leather over paper-covered boards, 4to. Seems to be from Hillsborough County and nearby towns (Dunbarton, Merrimack Co.). New Hampshire Militia, 9th Regiment, 1828-1837. Just over 120 pages filled out at least partially. The book contains copies of orders, at this rather quiet time in history, mostly for practice. The militia drills are typically scheduled for early May and early to mid-September. The clerk has copied the order, then recorded the men who are excused from the meetings, many because of injuries or illness. For example:

"John Kimball is exempted from Military Duty one year by reason of liver(?) complaint & General debility occasioning one effection of the head & eyes. Isaac Stearns, Surg. 9th Regt."

Others include religious objection:

"We the subscribers overseers of the society of friends in Weare in the county of Hillsborough do hereby certify that Flandrus (?) Hanson & James Hanson were members of friend society and frequently attend with society for public worship and we believe are scrupulous of bearing armes. John Paige / Samuel Osborn (clerk)."

Generally the organization is: transcription of the order, listing of men who are exempt from duty and why, then after the day of the exercises, the excuses of men who did not show up.

Endpapers have been removed. Paper cover to  boards is beginning to wear/peel off. Generally very good.
