William Yarrell (1784-1856) was an English zoologist and naturalist. These two series are the ones Yarrell is best known for. The format is based on an earlier "History of British Birds" by Thomas Berwick, and Yarrell defined taxonomy for generations of naturalists. John James Audubon was a friend and acknowledged Yarrell's help and influence on his own work. Thomas Berwick himself corresponded with Yarrell. A number of species of birds and fishes are named for Yarrell.
