Native American Style Altered and Decorated Percussion Rifle

.38 caliber, 38" octagon to round barrel, no S/N. Browned finish, brass furniture, hardwood stock. Rifle altered and shortened with the reduced-length forend secured by dried deer hide with some fur still present and the butt shortened by about 5" to a roughly 9.25" length of pull, in the form of the proverbial "blanket gun". Commercial percussion lock secured with a single screw, brass triggerguard with skeletonize pistol grip, drum bolster. Additional dried deer hide with some fur is wrapped around the butt and secured by nails and tacks. Rifle is accompanied by a stiff deer hide scabbard with some fur, with old copper rivets securing the seam along the lower edge and remnants of leather support hangers to secure the scabbard to a saddle.

Good. Metal is heavily oxidized with a dark brown patina and some pitting. Lock more pitted and ill-fitting, possibly a replacement. Action not functional, bore poor, heavily rusted and pitted with visible rifling. Stock with significant wear, wood loss around the lock and an old repaired break through the counterpane. Scabbard with similar wear and showing hard use. The authenticity of Native American used and decorated weapons can be extremely difficult to ascertain and no guarantee of such authenticity is provided.
