1. 58.5" long. Carved wood musket rest with spiral cut upper shaft, spike to toe, and curled ends to rest. Both ends are retained by nails but show no maker marks. Steel components have smooth rounded edges while wood is covered in a black varnished finish.
2. Item broken into three pieces measuring, 10.25", 26", and 16.5" to toe, shaft, and head respectively. Wood features a black varnish vinish with textile wrap to shaft terminating in gold threads. Toe has a socketed spike installed retained by a single nail. Head has twisted ends terminating in curls with loops to tips. Socket for head has some gold thread decorations at end. Loops to head permitted the item to function both as a muzzle rest for a musket and to be used hold a slow-burning fuse to set off cannons.
Condition:
1. Good. Toe spike rattles in place and shows some spots of oxidation starting to form. Rest itself has a patina forming to socket with flecks of oxidation beneath rest. Shaft shows some holes from termite damage with black finish worn off in places. Some chips to wood details below head.
2. Poor. Item has broken into three pieces with metal sockets loose at both ends. Textile wrap is discolored and torn at one end where item broke. Shaft displays termite damage throughout with holes along shaft. Socket for rest has been shimmed with red nylon cloth.
