Mosler Bank Safe, Called "The Cannonball"

American, 1917. Built by Mosler Safe Company, Hamilton, Ohio, the safe is manganese steel with a time lock and  includes pay safe and breech door compartments; ht. 52.5, wd. 26.5, dp. 28.5 in., wt. 3,300 lbs.

Mosler Safe Company built this steel safe for the Milan, Indiana, Farmers State Bank. With the stock market crash of 1929, the bank failed, leaving the safe in storage for the next 81 years. Restored in 2011, the piece features hand-painted lettering and glossy black finish over its fully functional steel form.
