.69 caliber, 42" rifled round barrel with proofs on the breech, long range rear sight and Belgian style percussion conversion. Tang dated "1844." Lockplate marked with an eagle over "L. POMEROY" and "1841 / U.S.", action functions properly. Three band walnut stock has iron furniture and a faint cartouche on the side flat. Complete with a correctly modified trumpet shaped ramrod with a recessed face for elongated ball ammunition. Pomeroy only produced 7,000 M-1835/40 flintlock muskets under their original contract and it appears that most of the few hundred that were subsequently altered to percussion, rifled and sighted were arms that had been originally issued to the state of Virginia under the Militia Act of 1808, and were forwarded to Frankford Arsenal in 1860 for upgrade. Less than 500 muskets were so altered for Virginia. This is likely one of those and as such a scarce secondary Confederate musket.
Very good, metal with a silvery patina and scattered staining, minor oxidation and some scattered pinpricking. Crisp wood with nice edges and some scattered handling marks and dings.
