Mexican-American War Medals of Corporal Wesley J. Banks

Lot of 2 Mexican-American War veteran medals identified to Corporal Wesley Johnson Banks (1825-1913). Features a bronze, shield-form medal, approx. 2.25 x 2.125 in., mounted to a tri-color ribbon suspended from a bronze bar reading, "National Association of Veterans," with "Wesley J. Banks / Ind. Inf." on reverse. Perimeter of medal lists major battles of the Mexican-American War, including Tabasco, Vera Cruz, Palo Alto, and Buena Vista, with "Mexico 1846" at center, surrounded by a laurel wreath, stars, a ship, crossed muskets, and a canon. Consignor relates that the medal was made from a melted down enemy canon captured during the conflict. Also with three-part reunion medal commemorating an encampment held at Cincinnati, Ohio in 1900. Pinbar reads, "Cincinnati 1900" with suspended patriot ribbon reading, "Mexican Vet" and ornate shield-shaped badge with a spread winged eagle, tricolor shield and flags, bust-length portraits likely of Zachary Taylor, and text reading, "National Mexican War Veterans Assn. Encampment & Reunion / 1846-1848."

Wesley Johnson Banks (1825-1913) was born in Garrard, Kentucky to William and Elizabeth Banks. The elder Banks was a veteran of the Revolutionary War, and Wesley followed in his father's footsteps, serving first in the Mexican American War with Co. A, 1st Indiana Infantry, and then the Civil War, in which he enlisted on July 1, 1863. After the Civil War, Banks and his family lived in Centerville, Iowa, where he worked as a farmer and is recorded as an applicant for membership to the Sons of the American Revolution, July 26, 1897.
