Massive Spear Point Bowie Knife by Hassam Brothers, Boston

12.5 in. spear point blade, 17.75 in. in overall length. Grooved, turned horn hilt with German silver ferrule and pommel cap, secured by spanner nut. Iron guard with acorn finials. Ricasso marked: HASSAM BROTHERS / BOSTON on both sides. The Hassam Brothers were cutlers working in Boston, MA ca 1853-1872. The acorn finials on the guard were trademarks on their larger bowie knives. The knife is accompanied by a period brass mounted leather covered wood scabbard that fits knife fairly well but may not be original to it.

Provenance:Property of N. Flayderman & Co.

Condition:

Very good overall. The markings on the ricasso remain crisp and the blade retains much original polish. Flecks of surface oxidation, light pinpricking and some very minor pitting are present on the blade. The grip is in similarly nice condition with a couple of minor, tight grain cracks. German silver mounts have a smooth, dull pewter patina. Scabbard is very good, retaining tight stitching and most of its original finish. The brass mounts have a deep umber patina. The frog stud is missing from the throat.
