The Grand Canyon
oil on canvas
22.25 x 36.25 in. (sight)
28.25 x 42.25 in. (frame)
Though a Washington resident for most of his career, Powell accompanied a U.S. Government sponsored expedition to the Grand Canyon in 1901, and this work was likely inspired by this visit.
The surface of the painting is quite dirty, and there are few scratches to the wooden frame. The canvas is not relined. There are some areas of circular craquelure, mostly in the sky. There are also two spots of paint loss, one with a small perforation, at center.
