Lot of 9 New York Cavalry CDVs, Including General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick

Lot of 9 CDVs featuring members of various New York cavalry regiments. Several of the soldiers are pictured wearing their uniforms, and many appear with hats, swords, or firearms. Primarily unidentified subjects, though many bear backmarks of New York photographers, including: H.L. Bliss, Buffalo; Mrs. E.H. Gillett, Le Roy; O. Pierre Havens, Sing Sing; Knight’s Gallery, Batavia; and Mason Otis, Cuba. The photograph credited to Otis also with 2-cent revenue stamp affixed to verso. Weapons of note include what appears to be an old Model 1833 dragoon saber (Knight's Gallery CDV), as well as two bowie knives and two revolvers, one of which appears to be a front-loader, likely props of the photographer (seated soldier, Matson Otis CDV).

In one vignette-style image captured outside, a young, beardless man appears on horseback, with verso inscription: “Shenandoah Valley / Sherman.” Another portrait, credited to C.D. Fredericks & Co., New York, NY presents General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick standing in a long double-breasted coat with his hat in his right hand. Kilpatrick (1836-1881) graduated from West Point in 1861 and was commissioned into Company H, 5th New York Infantry as a captain. After sustaining wounds at Big Bethel, VA, he was discharged for promotion and became the lieutenant colonel of the 2nd New York Cavalry. Kilpatrick participated in many battles and skirmishes, including the second battle of Bull Run, Stoneman’s Raid, Upperville, Gettysburg, Falling Waters, Brandy Station, and Resaca, where he was severely wounded. During his service, Kilpatrick was promoted twice, to colonel (12/6/1862) and brigadier general (6/13/1863), before resigning his commission in 1867 and serving as envoy and minister plenipotentiary to Chile.
