Letter from Secretary of War Henry Dearborn to MC William Giles

Dearborn, Henry (1751-1829). United States Secretary of War under Thos. Jefferson (1801-1809). Secretarial LS, 2pp, War Department [Washington, DC]. April 14, 1808. To William B. Giles (1762-1830), at the time Senator from Virginia. Giles would later served as the 24th Governor of Virginia (1827-1830). Dearborn is requesting names to fill unspecified State positions. These appear to be militia positions since he notes that they are not filling the 1st Lieut. in the Artillery company at this time. "You will readily perceive, Sir, how difficult it must be for the President or myself to make a selection of the most suitable characters from the respective States, without the aid of the Gentlemen who may have some personal knowledge of the individuals recommended, as well as others who may be willing to enter the Army."
