Large McClellan-Style ID Disc of John McGrath, Co. C, 109th Pennsylvania Volunteers

Civil War identification disc, 1.5 in. dia., white metal, with obverse profile portrait of General George B. McClellan. Surrounding text reads, "Antietam / Sep. 17th 1862." Reverse stamped with,"J. McGrath / Co. C / 109. P. V. / Aug. 9. 1862 / Cedar Mountain." Drilled hole present at top.

John McGrath, a resident of Philadelphia, PA, enlisted on March 8, 1862 as a private and mustered into Co. C, 109th Pennsylvania Infantry. His first battle engagement took place on August 9, 1862 at Cedar Mountain, and his regiment was also involved in the Battle of Antietam just a few weeks later. During the Battle of Chancellorsville (1863), he sustained a severe wound to his left elbow. Plagued by his injury, McGrath was transferred into the Veteran Reserve Corps on January 11, 1864 and subsequently discharged.
