Mrs. King responds to a pledge drive by her alma mater, the New England Conservatory of Music, reminiscing fondly: "I remember with gratitude my years at the New England Conservatory and I am unable to tell you how much my experience there has meant to me." Continuing regarding her pledge: "I am sorry that limited resources only enable me to make the enclosed pledge. The struggle for freedom demands a great deal of financial support. I am sure that you are able to understand this." It was while studying singing at the Conservatory that she met Martin Luther King Jr.

[Montgomery, AL]: n.p., 30 September 1956. 6 x 9 in. concert program featuring a portrait of King on the cover. The concert was composed of seven sections with an intermission and featured Handel, Schubert, and Gluck alongside traditional songs and spirituals. King would interweave the story of the Montgomery bus boycott and gave Coretta a tangible way to participate in the Civil Rights movement.
