Ketland & Co British Ordnance Contract Flintlock Carbine Bore Light Dragoon Pistol

.65 caliber. 9" pinned barrel. no S/N. Bright finish with brass furniture and a walnut stock. Flat pointed lock in original flint with a rounded, fenced and bridled iron pan and a flat faceted swan neck cock. Lock engraved under the pan with a large {CROWN / GR} and stamped at the tail in two vertical lines "KETLAND / & Co." Weak remnants of barrel markings that have been cleaned off suggest that British military proofs were present at one time. During the War of 1812 period the British Board of Ordnance sub-contracted a number of private arms makers in England, including Ketland, Moxham, Lowndes and others to produce commercial versions of current pattern military arms, many of which were used to arm the Canadian militias and other North American allies, including Native forces. This pistol appears to be one of those contract arms produced for use during the War of 1812.

Condition:

Good. Metal cleaned with a stippled appearance on the barrel and no markings legible. Lock moderately oxidized to a brownish gray with clear markings and some pitting. Lock remains fully functional, bore is fair, oxidized and pitted. Brass with an attractive golden patina, stock with moderate wear, scattered bumps and dings and a replaced piece of wood roughly 3.75"x.5" on the reverse forend. Some small areas of wood filler are present around some of the pins as well.
