JP Lower Marked Winchester 4th Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine

.44RF, 20" barrel, S/N 149632 (mfg. ca.1878). Blued finish, brass frame and furniture, smooth straight gripped walnut stock with carbine butt and smooth forend. Standard Winchester markings with barrel additionally stamped in two lines between the receiver and rear sight J.P. LOWER / DENVER, COL. with the J.P. LOWER mark also present on the top of the receiver. Assembly numbered 1168 on lower left frame tang, in butt mortise and inside toe of buttplate. Carbine leaf rear sight, front sight blade integral with front barrel band. Saddle ring, 3-piece cleaning rod in butt.

Good. Barrel with a mottled and oxidized grayish-brown patina, with legible markings and some scattered surface roughness. Frame with a medium golden patina. Mechanically functional, fair bore with clear rifling and moderate pitting along the entire length of the barrel. Stock with wear and use, with a gouge out of the comb, an old chip out of the forend on the reverse behind the barrel band and numerous scattered bumps and dings.
