[JONES, George Washington (1828-1903)]. Post-Civil War tintype possibly showing the Confederate State Congressman. N.p.: n.p., [ca early early 20th century].

4 1/8 x 2 3/4 in. period copy tintype showing an aged man wearing a top hat, riding on horseback. (Image a bit dark, lower right and left corners clipped). Housed in 4 1/2 x 3 in. paper sleeve/mount (some edge loss) with inked identification on verso, "Washington Jones & Coco," suggesting that the subject could be George Washington Jones in his later years.

After practicing law in Bastrop, Texas, George Washington Jones enlisted as a 1st lieutenant in the Confederate Army and was commissioned into Co. H of the Texas 17th Cavalry on 2/1/1862. He eventually attained the rank of colonel as commander of the 17th TX. Following the war, Jones was elected lieutenant governor of Texas in 1866, with James W. Throckmorton as governor. Both Jones and Throckmorton were removed from office in 1867 by General Philip Henry Sheridan for being obstructions to Reconstruction. He was later elected as US Congressman for the Texas 5th Congressional District in 1878 and reelected in 1880.
