Johnson Contract U.S. Model 1816 Type II Flintlock Musket

.69 caliber, 42" barrel retained by three flat bands with springs, no S/N. Bright finish, walnut stock. Lock marked US / {eagle} / JOHNSON under the pan and at the tail in two lines 1830 and MIDDTN CONN in an arc. No visible date on the tang or legible proof marks on breech. A weak script NWP cartouche is present on the counterpane, with a second illegible cartouche on the top of the comb, forward of the buttplate tang. Lock remains in original flint configuration, with a crudely refaced steel (frizzen). Barrel is reconverted from percussion to flint with a welded repair at the breech where it was formerly a cone in barrel alteration. Retains both sling swivels and an original full-length ramrod.

Good. Metal with an even plum patina showing scattered surface oxidation and some pitting. Breech weld polished and aged, showing more moderate pitting in this area. Lock mechanically functional, bore heavily oxidized with light to moderate pitting along its entire length. Stock with wear and numerous scattered bumps and dings. Several small, tight grain cracks are present, most notably two at the rear of the lock, one behind the tang and one at the rear lock screw. There is also some minor wood loss on the obverse stock, forward of the pan.

Estimate: $1,200 - $1,800
