While more well-known for his color field paintings, this work is representative of John Opper's early representational style. Dated 1930, Opper created this piece while still attending classes at the Cleveland Institute of Art and signing his paintings with his middle name, Sam. Shortly after the creation of this piece, Opper would move to New York to attend Columbia University and co-found the group, American Abstract Artists.
