John Brown Albumen Photograph

11 x 14 in. oval mat with gilt edge around oval. Framed 18.25 x 23.5 in. Heavily retouched albumen image that is a detail of a photograph by James Wallace Black of Boston, this photograph issued by Alexander Gardner, mount with his Washington address. Below image is beautifully calligraphed John Brown. Hero of Ossawolamie & Harpers Ferry. "His Soul Goes Marching On." On verso of print is manuscript in pencil Garrett Smith along with framing instructions, but we are uncertain what the significance of the abolitionist's name is in this context. Smith, of course, was nearly as well-known as Brown in his day, although he did not resort to the violence that Brown and his sons did. Lot includes original backing, which is no longer attached.

Condition:Minor foxing, especially on left side. Otherwise good condition. Frame has some discoloration where gilt is wearing.
