Jefferson Davis, Only Known War-Date Large Format Photograph by Minnis & Cowell, Richmond, Virginia

Oval salted paper photograph, 5.25 x 7.5 in., mounted on paper to 6.75 x 9.125 in., showcasing a bust-length portrait of Jefferson Davis. One of two photographs taken in Richmond, Virginia by Northern-born photographers George W. Minnis (1819-1877) and Daniel T. Cowell (1831-1890). Engraving made from the second portrait appears on the fifty-dollar Confederate banknote, issued on September 2, 1861, chronologically placing the original sitting at some point prior to this date. Davis wears a dark jacket and white shirt, with his tie loosely knotted and slightly askew.

Condition:

Photograph with scattered foxing. Originally under mat, suggested by elliptical ring of adhesive residue.
