Japanese Matchlock Tanegashima

.60 caliber. 42" octagonal barrel length. SN: NSN. Matchlock tanegashima with fixed notch and blade sights. Browned finish. Walnut stock is adorned with what appears to be gold leaf floral designs to both sides of grip and forearm overall. Stock also has brass barrel bands to two-piece forearm, as well as a wide brass breech band. Item features brass lock configuration, figural brass dragon plate, and floral brass rosettes. Top of barrel shows a peacock, followed by cherry blossom designs inlaid with what appears to be brass and pewter. Grip has a medallion with Japanese character. Item is of indeterminate age, most likely from the late Edo-period in the early to mid-19th century. Item without ramrod.

Good. Bore is dark with oxidation and residue. Finish has losses toward muzzle and surface oxidation with scattered pitting overall. Wood stock has some losses to gold leaf inlay, as well as small cracks to butt, and scattered light scratching overall. Item appears to be missing a brass barrel band to forend.
