(sight), matted with a CDV and framed together to 15.125 x 10.25 in., Madison County, VA. July 4, 1866. Signed "J.L. Kemper / Late Maj. Genl. C.S.A." beneath inscription reading, "'The thieves have bound the true men.'" At lower left appears the text, "Wm. A. Baker / Auburn, N.Y."

James Lawson Kemper was born in Madison County, VA. He attended the Virginia Military Institute and Washington College, where he received a B.A. in 1842. He was admitted to the Virginia bar in 1846 and soon turned to politics as a pro-slave states’ rights candidate. Kemper was elected first elected to the Virginia House of Delegates and served as Speaker of the state House (1861-1863) whilst simultaneously serving in the Confederate Army. He fought in several major battles including the Peninsula Campaign, Second Manassas, Antietam, and Gettysburg, where he famously sustained wounds in Pickett's Charge. Captured and exchanged but subsequently deemed unfit for further field command, Kemper was promoted to Major General in September 1864 and remained in charge of the Virginia Reserve until the end of the war. During his tenure as Governor of Virginia (1871-1878), he promoted reconciliation with the North and urged full civil rights and protection for the freedmen. During the years of Reconstruction (1865-1877), he corresponded regularly with William A. Baker (1795-1871), a lawyer and politician from New York. Here, Kemper has recorded a line from Act II, scene ii of Shakespeare’s Henry VI, Part I.
