Italian General Officer Helmet with Eagle

Model 1874 black fibre body. The exterior is entirely covered in black sealskin and trimmed with silver edging and fittings. Atop sits a hallmarked silver plate with floral design that extends to the rear of the helmet bottom edge, and to this plate is attached a gold crowned eagle with outspread wings, forward of a gold filigree comb which also extends rearward to the helmet’s rear bottom edge. Silver flower ear rosettes fasten silver chinscales with shield shapes,with leather strap and silver buckle, to the helmet skull. A silk, tri-colored ( red, white & green) national cockade is behind the left ear rosette. A large rayed silver star backplate has attached to it a five-pointed gold star with the crowned monogram of Umberto I (1844-1900), King of Italy (1878-1900), son of Victor Emanuel II. Interior consists of reddish-brown leather sweatband and blue cloth lining. Worn with parade plume of white heron and ostrich feathers upright through eagle’s back (not included). Includes hand painted figure depicting full uniform. 


Rarely seen helmet from this monarch’s reign. Cloth lining loose but present. Cockade worn. Tarnishing to metal fixtures and evidence of polish residue. Patina and wear consistent with age and service. Sealskin covering in excellent condition,
