Intricately Carved Meerschaum Pipe Depicting Escaped Slaves Being Chased by Dogs

Meerschaum pipe, 8.5 in. long (including the 3.375 in. stem), 2.75 in. width, 3.25 in. height. The expertly carved pipe features the bowl at center, surrounded by a dramatic representation of a male and female slave seemingly escaping and being chased by vicious dogs. The original patina emphasizes the painful expressions of the black male holding a broken chain and axe while the female is guardedly bending down close behind him.

Condition:

Consignor relates that the pipe has been stored in a padded box for over 50 years and was touched only to be inspected and wiped with a dry cloth. The cherry amber stem is in excellent shape. Bowl and carved details in very fine condition.
