[HAWKINS' ZOUAVES]. Sixth plate tintype of a corporal of the 9th New York Infantry Regiment. N.p., [ca 1862].

Sixth plate hand-tinted tintype. (Some residue near mat edge). Housed in half pressed paper case (light wear at edges, former hinge repair).

A wonderfully tinted portrait of a corporal from the 9th New York Hawkins' Zouaves, first formed in April 1861 from the cadre of a pre-war military club in New York City by the noted bibliophile Rush C. Hawkins. The tintype dates to ca 1862 as the corporal wears the second issue uniform consisting of a dark blue jacket and dark blue trousers that were noticeably narrower than the truly voluminous Zouave style. The ubiquitous short jacket was trimmed in red tape with a narrow stripe of red cord at the edge. The red tombeaux on the jacket had smaller trefoil loops and was not as wide or elaborate as other Zouave styles. The red fez and wide red sash are characteristic. The two chevrons indicating corporal are consistent with the rectangular eagle belt plate worn by NCOs. A very similar uniform was adopted by the 164th New York (Corcoran Guard) in February 1863.
