.36 caliber. 39.5" octagonal barrel length. SN: NSN. Halfstock percussion long rifle signed "P.H. Schantz" to top of barrel, with semi buckhorn and German silver blade sights. Browned metal finish. Brass stock fixtures include a starburst to carved cheek rest, heart to top of grip, and an oval to right side. Item does not have a patchbox and includes single piece wood ramrod.
According to AmericanLongRifles.org, P.H. Schantz is alleged to have been Philip Schantz, born in Darmstadt, Germany in 1817. Schantz, immigrated to the United States in 1828 and eventually settled in Lawrence Township, Stark County, Ohio sometime in the 1840's. According to census records in 1850, he operated a gun shop with two employees and produced around 100 rifles a year. He disappears from census records in 1860 and was not documented again until the 1880 Census in Barry County, Michigan, where it appears he gave up gun making and switched to farming like many other small scale gunsmiths of the period. Schantz died in 1909.
Fair to good. Bore is frosty and shows heavy pitting to rifling. Finish shows mottled darkened patina overall, with corrosion around touch hole and some scattered pitting overall. Stock has cracking to left of forearm, with scratching and mars overall. The brass finish on stock fixtures has worn away and they are left with a mottled grey-brass appearance. Lockplate has been ground down. Action is non-functional as hammer does not lock when pulled back.
