.38 caliber. 30.5" octagonal barrel length. SN: NSN. Half-stock percussion rifle with early ghost ring and blade sights. Blued metal finish to barrel and lock. Walnut stock has plain straight grip with cheek piece and brass fixtures to left side and a patchbox to right side of butt. Fixtures include several stars, a heart, and an oblong fixture marked "Isaiah:/55:12" is fitted to cheek piece. Lockplate is signed "A.W. Spies" on right side. Spies, according to the Database of USA Gunmakers, was a lock and gunmaker active in New York City during the mid-19th century and died in 1860. This gun appears to be a possible composite gun. Although wood to metal fit is good, barrel and lock appear significantly older and more worn than stock and brass fixtures. Patchbox was stuffed with greased cleaning cloth pieces, possibly to "antique" the inside of the patchbox and make the stock appear older.
Condition:
Fair to good. Bore appears dark. Finish to barrel and lock has depleted in most areas and was replaced by a dark grey-brown patina. Wood stock has some minor scratches and nicks scattered overall. There is some oxidation and thinning to brass finish on stock fixtures.
