Half Stock PA-KY Long Rifle Signed "Ashmore"

.45 caliber. 37" octagonal barrel length. SN: NSN. Pennsylvania-Kentucky style long rifle with percussion lock action and fixed semi buckhorn and blade sights. Browned metal finish with brass and silver accoutrements. Fiddleback maple half stock with a plain straight grip and forearm. Item has a brass buttplate and serpentine trigger guard. Fixtures include a silver six-point star to cheek rest on left side of buttstock. Lockplate is marked "Ashmore" in European-style gothic lettering with floral scroll engravings. Item has two brass screws to wrist of stock where significant cracking has occurred. Includes ramrod. Action is non-functional.

This item was possibly made by, R. Ashmore, of Pennsylvania sometime in the 1840's. Little is known about R. Ashmore besides his long rifles often being signed "R/Ashmore" or "R/Ashmore/Warranted". He is believed to have been active during the mid-era of long rifles.

Condition:

Fair. Bore appears dark. Finish has mostly turned to a deep red-brown patina and has scattered losses and scratches overall. Wood stock is broken through the wrist that appears to have been fixed or caused by two modern looking brass screws. Wood to metal fit around lock plate is not great.
