[GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC]. Knights Templar Coat and Gauntlets, converted to GAR Uniform, 1880 to 1900.

Black wool single breasted uniform frockcoat with standing collar, closed by nine brass GAR staff buttons placed in sets of three, lined in black polished cotton with a retailer's label for "Schrader / ALLEGHENY, PA."  The coat appears to have originally been a fraternal lodge garment with the faint "ghosts" of removed cross insignia on the cuffs.  The buttons have mixed maker's backmarks, indicating that they are replacements.  The lot includes a pair of cream colored buckskin cavalry style gauntlets with applied red wool and gold bullion Knights Templar fraternal cross insignia on the cuffs.

Provenance:The Civil War Collection of Dennis C. Schurr

Good, both items show normal age and service wear.  The gauntlets have areas of moderate staining.
