Original publisher's olive green cloth gilt (volume I dampstain, ex-library markings; volume II spotting, wear to extremities). Provenance: volume I, University of Maryland Library (ex-library markings, embossed seal on title page); volume II, Joseph M. Allen of Colon, Republic of Panama (ownership inscription on front free endpaper and throughout); Ethel Spooner, 13 October 1988 (gift inscription). 

FIRST EDITION, volume I, second edition of volume II. Edited by journalist Amy Jacques Garvey who collected the writings, orations, and aphorisms of her husband and published the first volume in 1923. The second volume was greatly expanded and included developments in Garvey's life up to the time of his indictment for mail fraud. With many photographic plates illustrating ships in the Black Star Line fleet and global UNIA members. This copy of volume 2 bears ownership inscriptions of Joseph M. Allen of Colon, Panama. Garveyism and the UNIA were extremely popular in Central America housing the most branches of the UNIA outside of the United States with 49 branches in Panama and the Canal Zone at its peak. Scarce.
