Fullstock Flintlock Rifle Signed C. Schneider

About .41 caliber. 42" heavy octagonal barrel length. SN: NSN. Fullstock flintlock rifle with semi buckhorn and brass blade sights. Item has a browned finish. Maple stock has a plain straight grip and forearm with three brass thimbles and brass forend cap. Item features a flintlock with game scene engravings, manufactured by R.W. Booth of Cincinnati. Booth was a maker of both percussion and flintlock actions. The barrel is signed "C. SCHNEIDER" to top, and lock is marked "R.W. BOOTH/CINCINNATI". It is most likely a Schneider & Son manufacture out of the Dayton, Ohio area. The firm was established in 1848, and several family members actively produced rifles, shotguns, and pistols until about 1877. Charles Schneider then succeeded the business. Charles was said to have been active during the later period of long rifles, mainly 1877-1883, but only produced a few percussion shotguns. Item features brass buttplate and serpentine triggerguard with double set triggers. This is a very plain long rifle, and does not feature a patchbox or any stock inserts aside from pinned nails in forearm. Item possibly reconverted to flintlock from percussion at some point. Lock was pulled and the touch hole appears to be a straight drill, and there is gapping between wood to metal fit of lock. Item is with original flint, but without ramrod.

Fair. Bore is dark. Finish has worn away to edges and there is a dark brown patina overall, with some crazing around wood to metal joints. Wood stock has a 2" crack to left side lock screw, and two small cracks on both sides of lockplate. Wood to metal fit around lockplate is not good.

Estimate: $300 - $500
