Fort Crawford, Wisconsin Territory, Letter to General Gibson Concerning Inspection of Stores, 1844, Plus

Letter from Lieutenant J.H. Caldwell to General George Gibson. 2pp, 7.75 x 10 in., "Fort Crawford W.T." January 22, 1844. Postmarked January 29 on verso, Prairie Du Chien, WI. With additional rubber stamp "Free" above address. In the letter, Lt. Caldwell complains about a "Mr. McGregor" who has been appointed as the inspector of provisions for Crawford County. Caldwell writes, "If you think that I am correct in my opinion, I will object to his inspecting the stores, for I have no confidence in Mr. McGregor's judgement of provisions." Caldwell then cites an example of McGregor's lack of judgement in his inspection of stores delivered by John Atchison, which were "pronounced as being according to contract" though in reality they were not. After some further explanation of his stance on the subject, Caldwell concludes, "I don't think that I should be obliged to receive stores from a man who knows nothing about them, simply because he happens to hold the appointment of inspector from the Governor of this Territory."

CDV vignetted bust portrait of a gentleman encircled by decorative print border on mount. Ink inscription on mount identifies the subject as "Mr. Jas. McGregor."
