Flintlock U.S. Model 1816-Type Militia Musket with Tower Marked Lock
.69 caliber. 42.125" round barrel secured by three flat, spring-retained barrel bands. SN: NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, walnut stock. Single shot muzzleloading flintlock smoothbore military style musket. Lock of British make in the style of the India Pattern Brown Bess (aka 3rd Model) and marked with a {Crown} under the rounded, fenced and bridled integral iron pan and TOWER in a vertical arc at the tail. Lock appears to be in original flint and the lock mortise was clearly cut for this specific lock. Breech marked with a P proof over the initials of an unknown inspector LH and with the letter M over the date 1821. Musket essentially conforms to the standard U.S. Model 1816 pattern, but with the English-made Brown Bess pattern lock and no "US" markings or similar marks indicating U.S. Ordnance Department acceptance. The gun was likely produced for state militia use by a vendor that acquired parts from various sources and then simply assembled the guns. Musket retains both sling swivels and a reproduction button head ramrod that is a couple of inches short of full length. An interesting, permanently attached sling is included with the gun. An interesting American militia musket from the first quarter of the 19th century.
Condition:
Very good. Metal with a medium pewter patina showing some scattered surface oxidation and freckles of discoloration and minor roughness. Barrel appears to remain in original flint with a slightly oversized touchhole that is still tapered and shows no indications of reconversion when inspected internally with an endoscope. Lock remains in original flint as well with most parts showing matching mating marks. Mechanically functional, bore moderately oxidized and mostly dark with some scattered pitting. Stock very good and fairly crisp with an old glue repaired crack inside the lock mortise that is not visible externally. Wood with some scattered minor bumps, dings and mars.
