First Lady Julia Dent Grant Albumen Photograph

Albumen photograph, 7 x 9 in., on cardstock mount, matted and housed in period frame, 12.75 x 15 in. Mount verso with applied paper tag bearing imprint of "Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant, Jr." with Washington, DC address, as well as penciled note, "U.S. Grant, Jr.," indicating that the photograph of his mother was in his possession at one point. A faint, penciled inscription is also included, which reads, in part, "Mrs. US Grant/ to/ ? Smith/ Washington, Pa." An attractive studio portrait of U.S. Grant's wife, Julia Dent Grant, possibly taken by Mathew Brady, ca 1860s.

Lightly bumped and worn corners. Even toning to print. Stain to lower margin. Minor loss to image along top and bottom edges. It appears that attempts were made to erase the inscription on verso.
