Famous Canadian Jubilee Singers Plantation Lullabies, ca 1900, Plus

Songs Sung by the Famous Canadian Jubilee Singers the Royal Paragon Male Quartette and Imperial Orchestra. Five Years' Tour of Great Britain. Three Years' Tour of United States. Hamilton, Ontario: Duncan Lithograph Company, n.d. [ca 1898].

12mo (124 x 162 mm). Half-title, music for 13 songs with just lyrics for 54 additional tunes. (Evenly toned pages.) Original publisher's illustrated wrappers, staple bound (even darkening/toning of wrappers, some oxidation to staples, creasing on front wrapper near spine with small tears at staples).

Souvenir booklet from the Canadian Jubilee Singers, an African American singing troupe which sang traditional spirituals and travelled extensively. Founded in 1878 by William and Sadie Carter in Hamilton, Ontario, they were inspired by the Fisk Jubilee Singers from Fisk University in Tennessee. The cover gives a distinct imperialistic tone with an American eagle and flag astride "Porto Rico [sic], Cuba," and "Phillipine Islands" [sic] and the phrase "What We Have We'll Hold," placing publication likely during the Spanish-American War of 1898 or soon after. Similarly, the rear cover has a crowned British lion on "Australia, India, Britain" and "Canada" with a Canadian flag and identical sentiment. Ties to minstrelsy and Jim Crow-era visions of "idyllic slavery" are also present with the cover and half-title, "Plantation Lullabies."
