Engraved Civil War Bone & Brass Field Glasses of Lt. W. Cox 2nd Wis. Cavalry,

French-made binoculars with MOP surround eyepieces and scrimshaw engraved bone barrels with U.S. Shield, Liberty Cap and inscription Lt. W. Cox 2nd Wis. Volt. Cavy. on one barrel and wonderful spread-winged eagle clutching U.S. flag and arrows in talons and ribbon banner with Union in beak, all in four colors; brown, red, blue and green, 4.25" open.

Cowan's was unable to find W. Cox in the records. There was a Lt. Charles Cox with the 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry and this is likely his piece made for him, but the engraver got the wrong first initial. Cox was with the Staff and Field of the 2nd, but later transferred to Company D. He later resigned and was commissioned into the 50th Wisconsin Infantry as captain. He was injured by Private Ole J. on the steamer Post Boy and died of his wounds.

Condition:Short shrinkage lines in each barrel and eyepiece, else excellent.
