English Sampler by Elizabeth Boley, Dated 1808

Probably English, 1808. A silk on Tiffany (muslin) sampler with an all-around bellflower border, various decorative elements including birds, crowns, plants and flowers, butterflies, a striped cat, and a dog, the verses 1 / Preserve me Lord amidst the crowd / From every Thought thats vain or proud / And raise my Wandering mind to see / How good it is to trust in thee / 2 / From all the enemies of Truth / Do thou O God preserve my Youth / And free my mind from Worldly cares / From Youthful sins and Youthful snares / 3 / Lord in my Heart though hard as Stone / Let seeds of early Grace be Sown / Still water'd with thy Heavenly love / Till I shall rise to Joys Above and signed at bottom in bordered box Elizabeth Boley / Aged 12 Years / 1808, framed; 16.75 x 13 in. (sight), 18.25 x 14.5 in. (frame).

According to the consignor's research, Elizabeth Boley was born in Somerset, England in 1796, but there is a record of her marrying Elijah Allen Wright in Campbell County, Virginia in 1826. It is not known when Elizabeth left England for the United States, but the sampler was found in Fall River, Massachusetts.

Sampler conserved and mounted on acid-free board with spacers, framed with archival glass. Several small holes.
