Bayonet, blade length: 15.75 inches. Overall length: 23 inches. An extremely fine and very rare 17th century English plug bayonet with broad curved clip point blade engraved with large crown over “J2 R” for James II King of England. The reverse side engraved “GOD SAVE KING JAMES 2 ANNO DOMINI 1686.” Bayonet with shell guard and writhen quillion block. Pommel nut writhen en suite. Turned English walnut grip. The largest and rarest English military plug bayonet we have cataloged.
This very rare bayonet is in remarkable condition for its age. Engraving on left side is still fairly crisp. Engraving on right side is well worn. Blade itself has been cleaned leaving an almost Damascus finish. Edge has five minute chips. Wood grip is very good with fine hand patina.
