[English & European History] Unusual and Quite Scarce An Inquiry into the Principles of National Order:..., Plus 1803 Wilmington, Delaware Imprint

Gisborne, W., D.D. AN INQUIRY INTO THE PRINCIPLES OF NATIONAL ORDER: with Reflections of the Present State of the Christian World, and Probable Causes of War, and the Best Means of Promoting and Securing the Future Peace of Europe. To Which are Prefixed, Two Tracts Written by Edward Earl of Clarendon, on the Subjects of War and Peace. London: Printed for M. Allen and James Wallis, 1798. Small 8vo, full tree calf, 211pp.

We found this title listed in "A Catalogue Numerical & Alphabetic, of the books in the Subscription Library at Hull...," 1805. It is listed as item 889, "An inquiry into the principles of national order, by W. Gisborne, D.D." There is no listing in WorldCat, Library of Congress, or any library we could find. Likewise, there does not seem to be any information on the author (there is a William Gisborne who was Colonial Secretary of New Zealand, but he was born in 1825). Most searches also find Thomas Gisborne, DD, (1758-1846) an Anglican priest and poet, who might have been related, but at least appears to be a contemporary. Thomas Gisborne was strongly associated with the Clapham Sect, an abolitionist group. While it is uncertain about W. Gisborne's affiliations, he does have a long section of this book that is anti-slavery, just after his history of English Methodism and the history of Charles Wesley.
