English Darning Sampler by Rachel Simpson, 1802

English, 1802. A silk on linen gauze ground darning sampler with minute hemstitch border, eight examples of various fabric weaves, and floral decorative elements, signed at center Rachel Simpson / 1802, framed; 12.5 x 12.5 in. (sight), 14.75 x 14.75 in. (frame).

Rachel Simpson was born in York, England in 1790 and was living in York at the time of an 1881 British Census. 

Provenance:Purchased from Susie Burmann, New London, New Hampshire, March 23, 2002 Property from the Americana Collections of Kenneth and Barbara Gruver, Germantown, OH


Sampler was folded top and bottom when originally framed, losing hemstitch border on those margins. Sampler mounted with spacers and conservation glass.
